How it works
From the first call to the final order
Every family's case is different, but most move through the same five steps. Here's what each one looks like, and what you'll be asked to do.
- 01
Step 1: A first call
A short call by phone or video. You tell me what's happening; I tell you your options and whether I'm the right lawyer for it.
- 02
Step 2: A first meeting
We go through your situation in detail, at the office or on video. Bring what you have, and we'll list what's missing.
- 03
Step 3: A written plan and estimate
A letter that says what I'll do, what it's likely to cost and the retainer. Nothing starts until you've read it and signed.
- 04
Step 4: The work
Paperwork, financial disclosures, negotiation, mediation and, if it comes to it, hearings. You decide on every offer.
- 05
Step 5: Finishing well
The judge signs the final order. I explain what it means day to day, and what to do if life changes and it needs updating.
Fees
What it costs, in writing
Most family cases are billed by the hour against a retainer: an amount you pay at the start that I draw from as the work is done. Your estimate says how much work your case is likely to need.
You'll get an itemized bill every month, so nothing comes as a surprise. Court filing fees and costs such as serving papers or a mediator's fee are separate, and your estimate lists them.

Step one is a short call
Tell me what's going on, and I'll tell you what the next step would be.
