Questions, answered plainly
If yours isn't here, ask it on the first call.
Getting started
Will my spouse find out I talked to a lawyer?
Not from me. I keep what you tell me in a consultation confidential, even if we don't end up working together. Tell me the safest way to reach you.
Can we meet by video?
Yes. Most first meetings and many later ones happen by video, including some evenings.
What should I bring to a first meeting?
Whatever you have: recent tax returns, pay stubs, account statements, any court papers, and a note of what your children's weeks look like. We'll list what's missing.
Divorce
How long does a divorce take?
There's often a waiting period set by law, then it depends on how quickly you can agree. I'll give you a realistic timeline once I know your situation.
Should I move out?
Talk to me first. Moving out can affect the parenting schedule and the house, and it's hard to undo.
Do we have to go to court?
Many cases settle by agreement, which a judge then signs. You may still need a short final hearing.
Children
Can my children choose where they live?
Their wishes can matter, more as they get older, but the decision belongs to the parents or the judge, not to the children.
What if the other parent doesn't follow the order?
Keep a simple written record of what happened and when, and call me. The court can enforce its orders.
Costs
How do you charge?
Most cases are billed hourly against a retainer, and you get an itemized bill each month. You'll have a written estimate before any work starts.
Can my spouse be made to pay my legal fees?
Sometimes, when one spouse earns much more than the other. We'll talk about whether it's worth asking for in your case.
Still wondering about something?
Ask it on a short first call. There's no wrong question.
